Barnaby (Richard Dreyfus) and Maxine Pierce (Judy Davis) are driving from Connecticut to Los Angeles to attend their son's wedding. Years ago, however, the death of a child placed an unshakeable burden on them and, as a result, they are now considering divorce. But the long drive will give them plenty of time to talk about things, and they will meet indubitable meet plenty of familiar and unusual characters along the way.
