Max Tavares is a plainclothed cop who gets kickbacks and protection money from the many smalltime crooks in Marseilles. In turn, he provides a payoff to Uncle, the amiable crook who more or less raised him. But these shakedown practices of Tavares' are cramped when he is assigned a new, hard-nosed partner from Paris, Carlos Gomez.
